Is CrossFit suitable for beginners?
Absolutely.
CrossFit is a strength and fitness programme built around constantly varied functional movements. But that doesn't mean everyone has to perform the same movements in exactly the same way.
At Zhi CrossFit, workouts can be scaled to your individual fitness level and experience.
A complete beginner and an experienced CrossFit athlete can be in the same class, working on the same general workout while using different weights, movements or repetitions.
The goal isn't to keep up with the fittest person in the room.
The goal is to become fitter and stronger than you were before.
Do I need to be fit before starting CrossFit?
No.
You don't have to get in shape before joining CrossFit. That's one of the reasons CrossFit works well for people starting their fitness journey.
Your coach can adjust the workout according to your current ability.
For example:If you can't do a pull-up, there are progressions you can work on.
If a weight is too heavy, we reduce it.
If a movement is too advanced, we use a simpler variation.
If the workout volume is too much, we adjust the repetitions.
If you're still learning a movement, we focus on technique first.
As your fitness improves, your workouts can become more challenging too.
What does “scaling” a CrossFit workout mean?
Scaling simply means reducing the intensity, volume and/or difficulty of a workout to make it appropriate for you.
There is no shame in scaling. In fact, scaling is a normal part of CrossFit training.
For example:
Pull-ups → Assisted pull-ups or ring rows
Box jumps → Step-ups
Heavy barbell movements → A lighter, manageable weight
Double-unders → Single-unders or another suitable progression
The workout may look different from one person to another, but everyone is working towards the same thing: better fitness.
At Zhi CrossFit, we want you to train at the level that is appropriate for you today — and gradually build from there.
What happens when I first start CrossFit?
If you are completely new to CrossFit, or have no previous gym and sports experience, we recommend starting with our Foundation programme.
Zhi CrossFit Foundation — RM380
Foundation includes:
3 × private 60-minute sessions
Introduction to basic CrossFit movements
Coaching on form and technique
Learning how to perform movements safely
1 month of unlimited access to normal CrossFit classes
The programme is highly recommended for people trying CrossFit for the first time or those with no previous gym or sports experience.
Please contact us before purchasing Foundation so that we can guide you through the process.
What happens during a CrossFit class?
A typical CrossFit class consists of several parts.
1. Warm-up
We prepare your body for the movements and workout ahead.
2. Movement or skill work
Your coach explains and demonstrates the movements. You will have an opportunity to practice and learn proper technique.
3. Workout
This is the main workout, often called the WOD — Workout of the Day.
Don't worry if you can't perform the workout exactly as written. Your coach will help determine the appropriate version for you.
4. Cool-down
We finish the session and help you recover before heading home. A typical class is about an hour, and you will be coached throughout the session.
What if I can't do the movements?
That's completely normal.
You are not expected to know how to do everything on your first day.
CrossFit includes movements that take time to learn and develop. Your coach will teach you the fundamentals and provide appropriate progressions.
You might start with a simpler version of a movement and gradually work towards the full movement as your skills and strength improve.
You don't have to be good at CrossFit to start CrossFit.
Starting is how you get better.
Is CrossFit safe for beginners?
Good coaching and appropriate scaling are important parts of CrossFit training.
At Zhi CrossFit, our coaches teach movement technique and help members choose appropriate versions of workouts based on their current ability.
For beginners, learning the movements properly is more important than lifting heavy weights or trying to do the most advanced version of a workout.
Your first goal isn't to prove how fit you are. It's to learn, move well and build a foundation.
If you have an existing injury, medical condition or other health concern, speak with an appropriate healthcare professional before beginning a new exercise programme and let your coach know about any relevant limitations.
How often should a beginner do CrossFit?
There is no single answer that works for everyone.
If you're completely new to exercise, starting gradually can help you build consistency and allow your body to adapt to training.
Your coach can help you determine an appropriate training frequency based on your experience, schedule and goals.
The most important thing is to find a routine you can maintain.
Consistency beats trying to do everything at once.
What should I wear to CrossFit?
Wear comfortable sports clothing that allows you to move freely. A pair of suitable training shoes is recommended.
You don't need an expensive collection of equipment to get started.
If you're unsure about what to bring, just ask us before your first session.

What if I'm older or haven't exercised for a long time?
You don't need to be an experienced athlete to start.
The important question isn't whether you can perform the most advanced CrossFit movements today.
It's whether the training can be appropriately adapted to your current ability.
That's where coaching and scaling come in.
If you've been inactive for a long time or have specific health concerns, start appropriately and discuss any relevant limitations with your coach and healthcare professional.
What if I'm nervous about joining a gym?
That's normal.
Many people feel uncomfortable walking into a new gym for the first time — especially when they see movements they've never done before.
You don't need to know the terminology.
You don't need to know how to lift a barbell.
You don't need to know how to do a pull-up.
You don't even need to know what a WOD is.
That's what coaching is for.
Our job is to teach you.
Your job is simply to show up and learn.
